How Smart Women Move Into Spring

I’m writing this on March 1. This is a very important day in our family, as was January 1 and February 1. No doubt April 1 and May 1 will also be special. My son Jack is very curious right now about the days of the week and which month we’re in at any given time. It’s one of the first things we discuss each morning when he wakes up. Jack asks some great questions – ones that I often think we adults would do well to slow down and ponder. What happens in March? Is March still winter, or is it spring? What’s next? What are we moving closer to? The last question is the great one for me – what am I moving closer to?

March is meaningful for several reasons. We move into spring which means more light in our lives and more time to do what’s most important. This is a wonderful time to plant seeds for our future dreams and provide the care and nurturing they’ll need to grow. Then we can spend the following months basking in the accomplishment of these dreams. In my Women’s Learning Circles we are currently focusing on where passion and energy reside at this time in our lives, and what our true purpose is as we move into spring and summer.

As I was driving home from taking my children to school and listening to the radio this morning, the old song “Time Passages” by Cat Stevens came on. It reminded me that time passes so quickly and about how essential it is that we find the courage to make the time to take the journey that will lead us to what is most meaningful in our lives. Annie Dillard said, “Because how we spend our days is, of course, how we spend our lives.” As time passes seemingly faster and faster, I feel more and more committed to making sure that I spend each day on what is most important. So, how are you spending your days? What are you planting this spring? How are you moving through the seasons of your life with meaning?

March is Women’s History Month. That seems so enormous to me. When I think about all the women who have shaped and helped define my life, it gets very big. Women have always made history and continue to do so. Just in the past few months we’ve seen a women become Speaker of the House of Representatives, a woman running for President who is a serious contender for her party’s nomination, and a woman named President of Harvard University for the first time in history. Check out page 3 of the newsletter to test your knowledge about women’s history.

Do you have women in your life who have made a difference in how you live in the world? I know you do. I invite you to pick up the phone this month and tell those women how their being in the world has shaped yours. If there are women who have shaped your life who are no longer living, light a candle in their honor while working at your desk or sitting with your morning coffee or tea.

As you move into mid-March – the beginning of spring – I invite you to explore what you are moving closer to in your life. This is a great time to plant seeds, tend your garden in a loving way, and watch the miracles that unfold.
